Static avalanches and Giant stress fluctuations in Silos
We propose a simple model for arch formation in silos. We show that small pertubations (such as the thermal expansion of the beads) may lead to giant stress fluctuations on the bottom plate of the silo. The relative amplitude ∆ of these fluctuations are found to be power-law distributed, as ∆−τ , τ ≃ 1.0. These fluctuations are related to large scale ‘static avalanches’, which correspond to lon...
متن کاملBusiness fluctuations and bankruptcy avalanches in an evolving network economy
We analyze the properties of a three-sector network economy characterized by credit relationships connecting downstream and upstream firms (inside credit) and credit relationships connecting firms and banks (outside credit). The network topology changes over time due to an endogenous process of partner selection (the preferred-partner choice rule). The output of simulations shows that a busines...
متن کاملStatic and dynamical nonequilibrium fluctuations
Various notions of fluctuations exist depending on the way one chooses to measure them. We discuss two extreme cases (continuous measurement versus long inter-measurement times) and we see their relation with entropy production and with escape rates. A simple explanation of why the relative entropy satisfies a Hamilton–Jacobi equation is added. To cite this article: C. Maes, K. Netočný, C. R. P...
متن کاملLim . iting stress states in granular avalanches
The SavageHutter theory fo r granula r avalanches assumes that the g ranula r materia l is in either of two limiting stress sta tes, depending on whether the motion is convergent o r di ve rgent. At transitions be tween conve rgent and dive rgent regions, aj ump in stress occurs, which necessarily implies that there is a jump in the avalanche velocity and /or its thickness. In this paper, a reg...
متن کاملStatistics of static avalanches in a random pinning landscape.
We study the minimum-energy configuration of a d -dimensional elastic interface in a random potential tied to a harmonic spring. As a function of the spring position, the center of mass of the interface changes in discrete jumps, also called shocks or "static avalanches." We obtain analytically the distribution of avalanche sizes and its cumulants within an =4-d expansion from a tree and one-lo...
